Ron Gibbs has been variously described as creating a warehouse rave for ‘music intellectuals’ and a shoegaze musician born into the wrong era. Both seem to miss the mark slightly. It’s more that the Michigan producer creates textured songs whose insistent electronica has the feel of waves lapping gently around you. The title track and the shimmering ‘Macro’ are both perfect examples of how he can create melodies which ripple softly through your head.
It means ‘Contact’ feels full of colour yet slightly washed out, the iridescent guitar lines and wobbly synths creating something that’s both nostalgic and future looking.
